Nine Songs You May have Missed from the Nineties

The nineties were a big part of music for me. Of course, i loved songs from all the decades up to that point. But, I think most people have a special place in their heart for the music of their High School years. Having graduated in *gulp* 1993, i was on the cusp of a world of changing music. I started High School listening to "hair metal" and ended up finding stuff like The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Jane’s Addiction, and a smattering of grunge-related music. I consider 1988-1993 the "real" era of alternative music, as opposed this mainstream crap that passes for alternative these days. Back in those days the local alternative radio station really rocked some good tunes and had some great DJ’s (George Gimark and Jeff K spring to mind). I was young, formidable, and stepped into a music scene that i’m still a big part of almost two decades later. It’s been a fun ride, folks.

Included in this update are nine little songs that may have slipped under the radar of the average radio listener of those days, or if you came into the "scene" a little later.

The songs can be found at: http://www.gigasize.com/get.php/-1099887436/ninties.zip

and include the following awesomeness:

School Of Fish – Three Strange Days

They Eat Their Own – Like A Drug

Drivin’ and Cryin’ – Fly Me Courageous

Frazier Chorus – Cloud 8 (Acoustic)

Lightning Seeds – The Life of Riley

Screaming Trees – Nearly Lost You

Teenage Fanclub – The Concept

The Wonder Stuff – A Wish Away

Tabula Rasa – Blue Revolution

10 Years, Baby!

So, today’s the day. Malissa and I have been married for 10 years now. A Decade. A third of my life. X, in Roman numerals. Our Decennial. The “Tin” (or “electronics”) Anniversary gift year. Wow. Ten Years. That’s not so much when you think about the grand scheme of things. But, in terms of marriage, it’s a pretty big leap. Those of you who know us, know that we’ve known each other for even longer than we’ve been married. We were friends in school, we went our separate ways, and we ended up together when all was said and done. We’ve had ups and downs and all kinds of in-between times, and we’ve managed to keep our heads on straight at the end of the day.

There is no magic formula for staying married. It takes patience, and the ability to know when to admit you’re wrong. It means knowing when to fight, knowing how to fight, and how to recover from each one. The first few years are hard work, but after a few…it becomes easier and easier to fly through the days and months and years without any major catastrophe.

All in all, and this is gonna sound corny, it takes love. Malissa and I are very different at times, yet completely alike in others. We’ve found common interests and goals, and don’t argue about the small stuff. We give each other space, yet can’t spend more than a day apart without starting to miss the other. We both believe in the idea of a “soul mate” and that we have each found ours in each other.

This being the most sugary sweet post I’ve ever written, I’ve also set up a “10 Songs for 10 Years” mix. These are 10 songs that I feel pretty much encapsulate the way I feel about love and marriage and Malissa.

So, go download it, if you’d like at: http://www.gigasize.com/get.php/-1100072121/10yrMix.zip

The ten songs are, in order,

Ben Kweller – Run

Nada Surf – Always Love

Rogue Wave – Medical Expenses (live)

Youth Group – Forever Young (cover)

Joshua Radin – Today

O.A.R. – Melissa (cover)

Joe Pisapia – Dancing Partner

Syd – Here’s a Love Song

Ben Folds – The Luckiest

Death Cab For Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark

Here’s to ten years, and a lifetime more.

Ah, to be young…

I heard a song the other day on a mix cd that really took me back to when i was a younger lad. A time when i had just started getting into music.

When I was a kid, I used to plop down in front of the tv like most kids. I’d eat my cereal and watch cartoons and PBS and be entranced by the vivid colors and music. I think that this early exposure to music really started my love of it at an early age. I mean…I got a drum-set at five, after all. Most of the shows I watched really focused on music and, of course, made me laugh. Some had the added bonus of making me learn something as well.

So, what I thought I’d do is post some of my favorite songs as a kid…though re-interpreted by new artists.

You can get all the tracks (and music guide) here: http://www.gigasize.com/get.php/-1100158292/KidMix.zip

Tracklist is in playing order this time and is as follows:

Kelly Hogan - Rubber-Duckie (Sesame Street)
Sarah McLachlan - The Rainbow Connection (Muppet Movie)
Tripping Daisy - Sigmund And The Seamonsters (Theme)
The Ramones - Spider Man (Theme)
Liz Phair with Material Issue - The Tra La La Song (Banana Splits Theme)
Blind Melon - Three Is A Magic Number (Schoolhouse Rock)
Better Than Ezra - Conjunction Junction (Schoolhouse Rock)
The Smartees - Sesame Street (Theme - Techno Remix)
Bonus Track - Guster - We Gotta Be Clean (Sesame Street)

As an added (double) bonus, Malissa’s sister had her little girl today. So, Abagail….welcome to the world. Here’s hoping some of this music will make it your way sometime via Uncle Jeff.

Back in Bid’ness

Hello, gang…

I’m finally back with a new mix uploaded and set to hopefully continue on a more regular basis. Sure, i’ve said it before…but i’m really trying this time. In fact, the format of things will change from here on out. Going forward, i will likely only post about 10 songs to save on space and download time. Plus, it’s easier on me to come up with a ten song mix. Themes will be a more regular attraction to the mixes as well. I’ve got several lined up, so be prepared. Also, i’m not using Muliplty.com to host the files anymore because you have to have an account to download them. I hate making people go through all of that just to get music. So, i’ll just load them up to a share site for large files. This time it’s with gigasize, because they host for 45 days…let the countdown begin.

Speaking of, you can find the mix here (complete with my "music guide" to all the songs: http://www.gigasize.com/get.php/-1100210760/TheEarlyJuneMix.zip

Track listing is as follows (lazy and alphabetical again):

Apocalypse Hoboken – Sweet Transvestite (cover)
Ben Folds – Zak and Sara
Bic Runga - Lonely Lola Cherry Cola Girl
Bright Eyes - Four Winds
Electric President - Ten Thousand Lines
Flourscein - Cathy’s On Crank
Ivy - The Best Thing
Jenny Lewis - The Charging Sky
Josh Rouse - Dressed Up Like Nebraska
Leroy - Good Time
matt pond PA - Holiday Road (cover)
Menomena - Wet and Rusting
Old 97’s - Designs On You (acoustic)
Portishead - Only you (live)
Punchline - Round Here (cover)
Speechwriters LLC – Clones
Student Rick - October Skies
The Futureheads - First Day
The Thermals - A Pillar of Salt

Enjoy and let me know if you love it or hate it.

The Second Coming of the…um…MIX

Ok, I’m trying something different here with this new mix. I’m loading all of the individual tracks up to a site where you can preview them and download only the ones you want. I figured this will be easier than getting something you don’t like, or already have.

I was going to go with a theme, as I have several in mind, but I just keep putting off the update and haven’t had the time to organize my thoughts to get it all together. So, I went with another random mix of songs that I’m spinning a lot of lately. These are all songs that I keep listening to over and over again, despite how many times I hear them. So, in my opinion, they are just THAT good.

There’s not much prefacing to do here, so I’ll just go right into it. Music can be found here:
http://updog.multiply.com/music/item/11

Ignore some of the weird MP3 tagging on the site….it pulls from the tags embedded in the MP3’s…some of which I’ve not edited yet. So, when you see “Syd - Dammit (good), the song is not called “Dammit (good)”, you’re just getting the “good” edit I have of the song, free of clicks and hisses and skips (because a version or two I had of it from other cd’s were old and skipped.). There you have it.

As for the blog itself, i’m still working out the kinks and have had a heck of a time formatting this mother-humper. So, bear with me a while and i’ll get it all figured out in due time. Now, where’s my HTML for Dummies book?

OK, onto the patented guide*.
(*guide not actually patented)

Augustana - Boston: In a little under a month, I’ll be going to Boston again, which will pretty much be a stop as I head to both Vermont to the north and New York to the south…but that’s a different story. This song always gets me thinking about my favorite city…on occasion, it has even nearly brought a tear to my eye. Yeah…I love Boston that much. Scary, huh? This version of the song is the one called the “2005 version”. It’s the one used in the video and sounds a bit more “full”. The piano is less “plinky” and more of a background instrument and the drums are more prominent. I think I like the early version better, but this is the one that got me hooked.

Beautiful South - Dream a Little Dream of Me: This is a cover of one of my favorite classic songs. It’s been done a billion times by a billion people, but this version is one of my favorites. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this song, as it stands and this cover does it justice.

Ben Folds - Fred Jones Pt. 2: Ben Folds can really write song. For example, this one is an emotional ditty about a man’s last day at work. It’s a touching song that really makes you think about the way we treat people as they move on from their job. I’ve had a lost of last days, and this songs makes me think about some of them. PS - Yay to our buddy Sam for getting to play drums with Ben on his upcoming tour. It’s gonna be legen…….dary.

Brian Bergeron - Anna: Yes, I had him on my last mix. Yes, I’m putting him up here again. But no more, people. Go buy this guy’s music and support yet another great New England singer-songwriter. This new(ish) song is catchy-catchy, I don’t see how anyone couldn’t like this song. So, yeah…see his shows, buy his music: http://www.brianbergeron.net/merch.php

Carbon Leaf - Grey Sky Eyes: I recently came into more of Carbon Leaf’s album collection and found this little gem. These Virginia (also a great place) guys are also very good at writing a great song that sticks in your head. This song is one of their slower, moodier songs…but I love them that way.

Colin Hay - Waiting For My Real Life to Begin: This song was used in an episode of ‘Scrubs’ when a woman imagined what death would be like. The version on the show featured the cast singing the song, but the original version (by former Man At Work frontman, Colin Hay) is a hauntingly great song. I really like the vocals on this song, and the way most of his songs are written: sad with a glimmer of hope.

Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into the Dark: Speaking of sad…this song gets me every time, but I can’t stop listening to it’s musical goodness. I can’t even begin to think about what to say about this song to make it any better than it already is. Just listen to it. Listen good. And, yes…it’s semi-popular…what am I doing listing music that you can hear on the radio or MTV or something? I don’t know, but there are more to come.

Dirty on Purpose - No Radio: This song has a crazy-weird video based on an 80’s aerobic workout video. Despite that, I still like the song. I saw these guys opening for Rogue Wave once and liked them, but never really listened to their music until I was watching Subterranean on MTV2…yes, that program again.

Islands - Bucky Little Wing: This song is a hidden track on the Island’s debut cd, and I’ve trimmed it down to remove the exceptionally long running time of rain only, before going into the song. While it sounds nice on the album with the rain, as a stand-alone track, I figured it’d be best to remove it. This another one of those weirdly sad-happy songs that I tend to gravitate quite often.

M Ward - Chinese Translation: This one’s a simple tune by M Ward, that tells a story of a man seeking advice from a man who…you’ll see.

Matt Skiba - The City That Day: I picked up this EP of Matt Skiba’s not long ago and fell in love with this song. It’s acoustic-awesomeness makes me wish I could play guitar. And sing. And write songs.

Push Stars - Any Little Town - This is an oldie, but a goodie. The Push Stars are yet another New England band I can’t help but like. This song, in particular, was probably their biggest hit, and it was only really regional at best. I actually last heard it in a CVS Pharmacy in Cambridge, Mass a few years ago. The first time I heard it, I was working part-time at a store in the mall and it was on our in-store sound system. The system would display the artist and title of the song in the back office, so after a few times of hearing it, I ran back there and wrote down the track info. The rest is history. The song has been a constant in my rotation for about…I’d say five or six years now.

Regina Spektor - On the Radio: My wife hates this lady’s music. I, for one, really like it. I generally have an aversion to female singers for some reason (with a few exceptions), but this woman can belt out a quirky piano driven tune that gets me thinking about the lyrics and melody, plus gets me to sing along.

Rogue Wave - March: This song is relevant for one more day at the time of this writing. So, I decided to include it in this mix. This track also has the distinction of being a harder to find song, since it was only released on a cd sampler from a UK magazine. I bought the magazine just for this one song, but found some other nice stuff in there as well.

Straylight Run - Existentialism on Prom Night: I got hooked on this song via its video, which is brilliant. The song has a nice driving piano (which I seem to gravitate towards these days) and some great lyrics. All I need to get me hooked on a song are those things, it doesn’t matter if the song gets popular or not…which this one did. Speaking of, this version posted is the video version of the song (or “demo” version). The official album release varied slighty and cut about 30 seconds out…I like this one better.

Syd - Dammit: This is the first song that got me into Syd. Seven years later, I’m still listening. This is his version of Blink-182’s “Dammit” that puts a whole new spin on the original. It slows it town into an almost ballad-like state and really captures the emotion behind the lyrics. It still amazes me every time I hear this song. Syd’s got a new album coming out in a month…i can’t wait.

The Shins - Phantom Limb: yes, yes…another semi-popular song. How popular? It was on SNL, for one. And for another…sheesh…I heard it in Wal-Mart last night on their music system. What. The. Hell? All of that aside, and even after all of the buzz that surrounded the band after the movie “Garden State”. I still like this song and it’s weird little hooks and melodies. Lead singer James Mercer sure writes some enigmatic lyrics, but a little weirdness every now and again is good.

And i’ll leave you with some visual fun:

So long Gypsy Tea Room

Thanks to Chris, i found out this weekend that a staple of the live music scene in Dallas is closing. That’s right, in just a few short weeks, the Gypsy Tea Room will be closing it’s doors.

Now, i saw a lot of shows there over the years. They Might Be Giants, My first Guster show (and at least three others), Nada Surf, Cold War Kids, Rogue Wave, King Of France, Kathleen Edwards, Wheat, John Mayer, and probably many others i’m forgetting. The ones i could remember to list were great. I have tons of picture from each show there and know the layout like the back of my hand.

That being said however, i can’t help but say Yay! I loved the shows there, but i absolutely hated the venue. If anyone here has ever been to a show at the GTR, you’ll know three words well: Smoke, Crowd, and Hot.

Everyone of those things went into play every time you saw a show there. It didn’t matter who was playing, what time of year, anything…it was always the same thing. You could walk from the front door to the bathroom and smell like smoke, be sweating and have been groped three times in the two minutes it took to get there.

So, Gypsy Tea Room: i won’t miss you too much. emoticon

And thank goodness there’s now other options for venues in Dallas (like the Granada!).

Oh, and bands…if you’re reading this: Just play Denton instead. Seriously, Hailey’s is my absolute favorite place in the metroplex to see a small show right now. Check out a sow there sometime, they’ve always got the next big thing before they’re the next big thing.

The Start Up Mix CD

Ok…so, i’ve just put together a little teaser cd that will give everyone an insight to what i’ve got spinning in my cd player now.

What i’ve done is load up about 18 songs or so to a sharing site in zip file format. Feel free to download and arrange them in any order you see fit. They are defaulted to alphabetical right now because i am lazy. I’m also so lazy that i’m only half-assing my track comments.

To get this out of the way now, i’d like to say that if you like the music here, go support the artists. Buy the cd, but a t-shirt, see a concert, donate some gas money, something….anything helps when you’re out there trying to make a living and make music at the same time.

The file can be found on: http://www.badongo.com/file/2216140

The Songs are:

Arthur and Yu - Come to Me — Sonya Westcott, former Rogue Wave bassist, went up to Seattle and started up this band with another musician and it sounds pretty darn good. I just found this track a few days ago and am already looking forward to the full length release.

Ben Kweller - Penny on the Train Track — i first *really* heard this song on a flight from California to Texas and it stuck in my head so much that i had to remember exactly what i was hearing so i could remember to tell my wife about it when i landed.

Brian Bergeron - Speed — Speaking of my wife, she is actually the one who tracked this guy down. usually, i’m intorducing her to music…this time, she found the New England gem and passed the great tunes on to me. Yay.

Cat Empire - Hello — I don’t know too much about this song. I heard it on the radio a few weeks ago (thanks, DJ Janice!) and loved it’s catchiness and great little upbeat melody.

Cold War Kids - Hospital Beds — Cold War Kids are really cathing on in the indie world an have come a long way since i first saw them last year. They have a helluva stage show and really put a little extra something to all their music. The best part is that it sounds just as good live as it does on the raw-sounding album.

Foreign Born - We Had Pleasure — I saw these guys opening for Rogue Wave last year on my birthday. I was selling merchandise for the band, and these guys were set up next to us. I chatted with them all night and they were not only great people, but great musicians as well.

Guster - Satellite — This is my requisite Guster song…all of my mixes pretty much have one. These guys started the whole indie music ball rolling for me. This is their newest single and it really showcases how far they’ve come from the old acoustic guitar and conga drum days.

Islands - Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby — Ok, ok…i’ll admit it: MTV2 sometimes has good music. The show subterranean is well represented here on this cd, as many of the songs here have been on there. Most of them, this one included, i had not heard before the show. This track is as damn catchy as they come…complete with "doot doots" to boot (boots).

King of France - Mexico — Another Rogue Wave opener…this time, it was also for Nada Surf. These guys also put on a great show and were nice enough to randomly hand us a set list after the show. Very nice guys that have some great little quirky music.

Nada Surf - Imaginary Friends — Nada Surf needs almost no explaination. These guys are more than just their radio hit "Popular". They’ve put out so many good songs on so many quality albums, it was hard for me to pick just one to put on this. So, i went wth one of my faves.

Rogue Wave - Debaser (Pixies cover) — Oddly enough, this is the only cover on my mix. This song stick in your head and doesn’t go away easily. Just ask my wife…who keeps singing it throughout the house on weekends. Maybe Roge Wave didn’t write it, but they sure made it sound just as good as the one’s who did.

Sparrow House - Last Fall – Sparrow House is a side project from Voxtrot member Jared Van Fleet and is nice, moody lo-fi at it’s best. Don’t believe me? Check out his myspace page for other examples…like "When I am Gone". The guy can really write some beautiful songs.

Syd - 6:45 — This is one of Syd’s older tracks, but one of my all-time faves. I couldn’t have a mix without my Northeast pal and decided to go back a bit for this one. It’s a great song that really reminds me of my time in Boston, what with all the talk of waiting for trains and all. New stuff is coming from this guy soon…and if you like this song, the new stuff will blow you away. Trust me on this one.

The Comfies - Medicine — Syd’s drummer, Sam Smith, is also the drummer for Nasheville-based Comfies (formerly Harper). They have a nice EP out right now that runs up and down the volume and tempo dial. In the few songs they toss out, it satisfies almost every taste and keeps you wanting another bite.

The New Pornographers - Sing Me Spanish Tecnho — This song is another MTV2 find. I’ve known of the band for a while, but this song really got me into them much more.

The Walkmen - Loiusiana — Again, more MTV2 finds. Nice catchy indie rock, with a tinge of country that i’m all for promoting out there. Blend the genres, mix it up…mmmm…yummy.

Viva Voce - From the Devil Himself — Wow…MTV2 again…darn Subterranean. This song really stood out to me for it’s retro feel. Listen for Beatles, Beach Boys, Mama’s and the Papa’s…good stuff.

Voxtrot - Soft and Warm — Austin’s Voxtrot is really heating up the indie scene lately as well. This song really jumped out at me when i first heard it, and continues to be one of my favorites still.

So, there you go kiddies. Download, listen, support, repeat.

Let me know if you love it or hate it. But, if you do hate it, at least pretend you tried to like it…like taking a bite of sauerkraut.
