So long Gypsy Tea Room

Thanks to Chris, i found out this weekend that a staple of the live music scene in Dallas is closing. That’s right, in just a few short weeks, the Gypsy Tea Room will be closing it’s doors.

Now, i saw a lot of shows there over the years. They Might Be Giants, My first Guster show (and at least three others), Nada Surf, Cold War Kids, Rogue Wave, King Of France, Kathleen Edwards, Wheat, John Mayer, and probably many others i’m forgetting. The ones i could remember to list were great. I have tons of picture from each show there and know the layout like the back of my hand.

That being said however, i can’t help but say Yay! I loved the shows there, but i absolutely hated the venue. If anyone here has ever been to a show at the GTR, you’ll know three words well: Smoke, Crowd, and Hot.

Everyone of those things went into play every time you saw a show there. It didn’t matter who was playing, what time of year, anything…it was always the same thing. You could walk from the front door to the bathroom and smell like smoke, be sweating and have been groped three times in the two minutes it took to get there.

So, Gypsy Tea Room: i won’t miss you too much. emoticon

And thank goodness there’s now other options for venues in Dallas (like the Granada!).

Oh, and bands…if you’re reading this: Just play Denton instead. Seriously, Hailey’s is my absolute favorite place in the metroplex to see a small show right now. Check out a sow there sometime, they’ve always got the next big thing before they’re the next big thing.
